Essequibo River
The Essequibo River is South America's third-largest river by volume and Guyana's greatest waterway, running approximately 1,010 kilometres from the Acarai Mountains near the Brazilian border to the Atlantic Ocean. It drains more than two-thirds of Guyana's territory and has shaped the country's landscapes, wildlife, and human history for thousands of years. For travellers, the Essequibo offers a rare blend of untouched rainforest, colonial heritage, river island communities, and extraordinary biodiversity—all accessible as a day trip from Georgetown or as the backbone of a multi-day interior expedition.
