Bidbid Castle
Bidbid Castle is a 16th-century Omani fortification standing at the heart of the town of Bidbid in the Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate, roughly 60 kilometers west of Muscat. Built by a local tribe to guard the Samail Gap—the vital mountain corridor linking the coast to Oman's interior—the square fort combines a dramatic round watch tower perched on a rocky outcrop with traditional mud-and-stone architecture, a small mosque, and a living falaj irrigation channel that still runs beneath its walls. Restored in 1988 as one of the first Omani forts to use traditional construction methods, the castle today offers a compact but rewarding visit of around 45 minutes: climb 42 steps to the tower's summit for sweeping wadi views, trace decorative arches and ancient cannon placements, and see how water, defense, and daily life were woven into a single structure.
