Trou de Fer

Trou de Fer is one of the most jaw-dropping natural spectacles on Réunion Island: a basalt-walled canyon roughly 300 metres deep where four separate waterfalls cascade into near-total obscurity, the loudest of them estimated at over 700 metres — the tallest in any French territory. The name literally means "Iron Hole" and reportedly comes from the metallic ring the water makes as it hammers the rock walls far below. From the wooden belvédère at the canyon's edge, you stare down into a vertical jungle of ferns, mosses and tamarind trees while mist curls in and out of the gorge like something alive. This is not a place you drive up to and photograph from a car park. The belvédère sits deep inside the primary forest of Bélouve, and reaching it means a walk through one of Réunion's most biodiverse woodland patches — tree-fern corridors, dripping lichens, birdsong that shifts with elevation. The payoff is a view that most visitors describe as humbling: the sheer scale of falling water against volcanic rock, heard as much as seen. For a full panorama of all four cascades, only a helicopter pass reveals the entire amphitheatre from above.
