Gustavia Lighthouse

The Gustavia Lighthouse is Saint Barthélemy's most photogenic landmark — a compact white conical tower capped with a bold red band, perched atop Fort Gustav hill overlooking the island's charming capital harbor. Built in 1961 and first lit in 1962, this nine-meter beacon has guided yachts and fishing boats into Gustavia Bay for over sixty years. For visitors, the draw is not the lighthouse mechanism itself but the jaw-dropping panorama from its hilltop garden: the entire harbor spreads below like a living postcard of tall masts, colorful rooftops, deep blue water, and neighboring islands floating on the horizon. A 15-minute uphill walk from the center of town delivers you to the site, where stone ramparts, old cannons, and a powder house recall the Swedish military era. Today the grounds serve as a social gathering spot where locals bring wine for sunset apéros, photographers chase golden light, and yacht spotters watch the famous St Barths Bucket Regatta fill the bay with square-riggers. Admission is free, and the experience costs nothing more than a little legwork.
