Alamut Castle

Perched on a sheer rocky spur nearly 200 meters above the village of Gazor Khan, Alamut Castle is the haunting ruin of the medieval world's most legendary fortress. For 166 years it served as the headquarters of Hassan-i Sabbah and the Nizari Ismaili state—a mountain stronghold so strategically brilliant that no army could take it by force until the Mongols finally ended its reign in 1256. Today, a steep climb through dramatic Alborz mountain scenery rewards visitors with panoramic valley views and the atmosphere of one of history's most storied places. The castle's very name—often translated as "Eagle's Nest"—originates from a local ruler who, during a hunt around 840 AD, watched an eagle perch atop a cliff and recognized the tactical advantage. That instinct proved correct: the fortress survived Seljuk sieges and dominated the region until it fell to Hulagu Khan's Mongol armies. Its famous library, once home to astronomers, mathematicians, and philosophers, was torched during that conquest. In July 2026, Alamut and its six related fortifications earned UNESCO World Heritage status as a rare testimony to the Nizari Ismaili cultural tradition.
