NMI Museum of History and Culture
The NMI Museum of History and Culture in Garapan, Saipan is the official repository of the Northern Mariana Islands' entire historical record — from ancient Chamorro latte stones to Spanish galleon treasure, German colonial stamps, Japanese sugar-industry artifacts, World War II relics, and the living traditions of Chamorro and Carolinian islanders. Housed in the largest Japanese-era building to survive the war on Saipan, the museum is both a collection and a monument in itself. Its galleries walk visitors through seven distinct historical eras that shaped these Pacific islands: the Ancient Chamorro Period, Spanish Period, German Period, Japanese Period, World War II, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands era, and the modern Commonwealth Period. Notable holdings include pottery and gold from a 1638 Spanish galleon wreck, original 19th-century Freycinet sketches, Catholic liturgical objects, and deeply personal wartime belongings donated by descendants of veterans from multiple nations.
