Pleasant Peak

Pleasant Peak is a modest summit on East Falkland, in the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), sitting in the Wickham Heights ridge about two miles (3.2 km) north of RAF Mount Pleasant—the airfield that is the main gateway to the archipelago. Reaching around 269 metres, it is one of dozens of low, turf-and-quartzite hills rolling across the island's windswept interior rather than a dramatic alpine climb. What gives the hill real weight is its history. The summit is the site of a 1982 friendly-fire tragedy and is marked by a memorial cross, which makes Pleasant Peak a place of remembrance on the wartime landscape of the islands more than a destination for panoramic hiking. Visitors should also know that access is not simply a walk from a roadside: climbing references describe the summit as reached only via the Mount Pleasant airfield area.
