Sanderburg

Sanderburg is the smallest and youngest of Windhoek's three romantic hill castles, a turreted stone house that architect Wilhelm Sander built for himself between 1917 and 1919. Perched on a ridge in the city's smart eastern suburbs, it looks like something dropped from a Rhineland fairy tale onto an African hilltop—an eclectic mix of medieval battlements, a crenellated tower and narrow arched windows rendered in local sandstone. It is still a private home, so there is no interior to tour and no ticket to buy. The reward is simpler and just as satisfying: pull over on the quiet residential street, cross to the opposite side, and frame the castle against the skyline. Pair it with its two grander siblings nearby—Schwerinsburg and Heinitzburg—to make a short, memorable loop through Windhoek's German colonial past. Built by an architect who shaped much of the capital, Sanderburg is best in the low light of late afternoon, when the western tower glows and the dry winter air keeps the views sharp.
