Esch-sur-sure castle tower

High above a tight loop of the River Sûre, the ruins of Esch-sur-Sûre Castle crown a rock spur over one of Luxembourg's most picturesque villages. First recorded in 927, it ranks among the oldest castles in the country and was for two centuries the seat of the Lords of Esch. Today the consolidated ruins are free and open to wander, reached by a short climb of steps from the lane below, and they reward you with sweeping views over slate roofs, the narrow valley and the river that wraps the town on three sides. There is no ticket office, no fixed opening hours and no guide — just stones, panels that tell the story, and a floodlit silhouette after dark that the commune itself calls worth the detour. For a site with views this good, asking nothing is part of its charm.
