Uduwara Purana Viharaya
Uduwara Purana Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple nestled in the hill country of Sri Lanka's Uva Province, perched at nearly 1,000 metres elevation in the quiet village of Uduwara near Hali-Ela. Local tradition links its founding to King Valagamba, the storied first-century BCE ruler, and the temple carries a sacred bo tree said to be more than 500 years old. The temple's very name tells a story: King Valagamba is believed to have raised a high platform here, upon which a monastery—the "Uda Wehera," or upper temple—was built. Over centuries, Uda Wehera softened into Uduwara, and the village grew up around it. The suffix Purana, meaning ancient, marks this as a site of deep roots in the landscape and in the living faith of the surrounding community.
