Memorial Park of Struggle and Victory (Spomen-park borbe i pobede)

High on the green slopes of Jelica Mountain, a few kilometres above the West Morava valley and the city of Čačak, the Memorial Park of Struggle and Victory (Spomen-park borbe i pobede) is one of Serbia's most striking and least-visited monuments to the Second World War. Designed by the celebrated architect and urbanist Bogdan Bogdanović and opened in 1980, the 36-hectare hilltop complex honours the roughly 4,500 Partisan fighters and civilian victims of fascism from Čačak and its surroundings who died between 1941 and 1945. It is emphatically not a conventional war memorial. Rather than soldiers, rifles or the red five-pointed star of socialist iconography, Bogdanović raised a strange, dreamlike ensemble of megalithic stone: a pyramidal burial mound, a carved dolmen and, crowning the whole, a 12-metre triple 'megaron' swarming with 620 mythological beasts. Walking it feels less like visiting a battlefield shrine than like discovering a lost ancient site transplanted onto a Serbian hillside, all while the city and valley unroll at your feet.
