Santuario della Beata Vergine della Consolazione
The Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Consolation in Borgo Maggiore is a bold exercise in mid-century Italian sacred architecture, designed by Giovanni Michelucci—one of the country's most celebrated modernist architects—and consecrated in 1967. Set into the hillside with its main worship space four metres below street level, the trapezoidal complex unfolds as a sequence of pathways and volumes that critics have compared to a natural cave or a tent, integrating seamlessly with the landscape rather than dominating it. Beyond its architectural significance, the shrine holds a special place in San Marino's religious life: Our Lady of Consolation is Co-patroness of the Republic, and her feast on the first Sunday of June draws large gatherings. Owned by a confraternity and administered as a parish church, it serves both as a place of daily worship and as a landmark for visitors exploring the lower town of Borgo Maggiore.
