Road Town
Road Town is the capital and largest town of the British Virgin Islands, tucked along the centre of Tortola's south coast inside the horseshoe sweep of Road Harbour. Roughly 15,000 people call it home, and it functions as the archipelago's beating commercial and maritime heart—its name borrowed from the nautical term "the roads," an anchorage open enough for ships yet easy to reach. This is not a polished resort strip but a working port town that doubles as the Caribbean's bareboating capital. Pastel-painted West Indian buildings with fretwork trim and corrugated-tin roofs line a compact core you can walk in an hour, while yachts, ferries and cruise tenders shuffle through the harbour outside. For visitors, Road Town's real value is twofold: a pocket-sized dose of authentic island history and daily life, and the natural jumping-off point for Tortola's beaches, mountains and the surrounding islands.
