Akležeris
Akležeris is a remarkable geological curiosity tucked into the pine forests of Dzūkija National Park in southern Lithuania. Once a genuine open-water lake covering nearly ten hectares, it has been slowly transforming into a raised bog over the past half-century — a living demonstration of how landscapes evolve. The name itself, derived from the Lithuanian word aklas (silted, overgrown), has preserved the story of its vanishing water for generations. Today, visitors walking the Dzackagiris educational trail find a mosaic of sphagnum moss, sedges, shrubs, young trees, and scattered pools of open water where a lake once harboured silver crucian carp and moored boats. The experience of standing at the edge of a former lakebed now reclaimed by a bog is unique in the region — a snapshot of ecological succession happening in real time.
