Le Grand Havre

Le Grand Havre is a wide, sheltered bay on Guernsey's north-west coast where the tide rolls back to reveal a broad expanse of golden sand, shallow rockpools and gentle channels that invite you to wade, paddle or simply wander. Protected from the worst of Atlantic swells by two curving headlands — Rousse to the south and Chouet to the north — this is one of the island's most accessible and family-friendly beaches, yet it also carries a remarkable geological story: the bay once formed the western entrance to a tidal channel that split Guernsey into two separate islands. As the tide falls, the foreshore opens up into a landscape that feels enormous — scattered rocks emerge, pools shimmer and fill, and the sand stretches for a considerable walk before you reach the water. At higher tide, the sea presses closer to the old sea wall and access points, making it a shorter carry for paddleboarders and a calmer swim for those who prefer deeper water closer in. The bay is consistently popular with families, swimmers, paddleboarders and dog walkers, all drawn by its easy parking, kiosks at both ends and genuinely sheltered character.
