Banshtitsa River

The Banshtitsa (Банщица) is a 22-kilometre river in western Bulgaria that threads from the forested slopes of Osogovo Mountain down through the town of Kyustendil and into the Struma River. Though small in scale, it has been a defining presence for this town since antiquity — the river is counted among the city-forming factors of ancient Pautalia, medieval Velbuzhd, and present-day Kyustendil. Today the Banshtitsa is at a turning point. Community-led clean-ups have removed over a thousand tonnes of waste from its lower stretches, and a 2025 design workshop convened architects, students and residents to reimagine the river as a living urban corridor — a green spine connecting neighbourhoods, nature and cultural life.
