Tsimbazaza Zoo & Botanical Gardens
Tsimbazaza Zoo & Botanical Gardens is Antananarivo's compact gateway to Madagascar's extraordinary biodiversity. Spread across 24 hectares in the Tsimbazaza district, this park blends lemur enclosures, a nocturnal house, a central lake fringed by herons, botanical collections representing the island's varied climatic zones, and a museum housing the skeleton of the giant elephant bird. Set at roughly 1,250 metres elevation about 15 minutes from the city centre, it works as a crash course in why this island fascinates naturalists — and a useful primer before heading to more remote national parks. The park was established in 1925 during the French colonial period and later renovated into its current form. It is operated by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as a public-facing showcase of Malagasy biodiversity, with a conservation-breeding program for lemurs. Foreign visitors typically pay around 15,000 Malagasy Ariary (roughly €3–5), making it one of the most affordable wildlife experiences in Madagascar.
