Chendebji Chorten
Chendebji Chorten is a large whitewashed Buddhist stupa standing beside the highway in central Bhutan's Trongsa District, roughly 41 kilometres west of Trongsa town at 2,430 metres elevation. Built in the 18th century in the distinctive Nepalese style modelled after Kathmandu's Boudhanath, it was raised to subdue a powerful demon whose head was said to be buried on the very spot where the stupa now stands. The chorten's painted eyes gazing in all four directions and its golden spire make it one of the most unusual and photogenic religious monuments along Bhutan's main east-west road.
