8 November Bridge

The 8 November Bridge—Pont 8 Novembre—is one of Conakry's most consequential, and most storied, pieces of road infrastructure. Far from a quiet river crossing, it is a busy highway interchange that acts as the gateway to Kaloum, the historic peninsula that forms the capital's downtown and central business district. To reach the old city core by road, virtually every traveler passes over or beneath it, which is exactly why this junction has sat at the nerve-center of Guinean politics for decades. Today the name lives on more than the original structure does. Built in the 1960s, the first bridge was demolished in 2012 and replaced by a modern road interchange, while the surrounding approach roads branch toward the international airport, the port, and the neighborhoods north and south of the peninsula. For a visitor, the 8 November Bridge is best understood as a stop en route—a chance to read a layered page of Guinean history off its graffiti-covered walls and to feel the pulse of a city that grows around a single, hardworking crossroads.
