Ultra Moenia Festival
Imagine a concert that ends at dawn inside a 2,500-year-old necropolis, wine tastings held among Byzantine frescoes, and guided walks to a natural spring that the Roman writer Pliny the Elder once called miraculous. That is the Ultra Moenia Festival, a three-day cultural event that transforms Manduria's Archaeological Park of the Messapian Walls into a stage for music, history, food, and the sea. The festival's name itself points to what makes it special. "Ultra Moenia" means beyond the walls, and the event was conceived as a way to look past the boundaries of a small Puglia town and reveal the extraordinary layers underneath: Messapian ruins dating back to the 6th century BC, an underwater archaeological park of marble sarcophagi, the Primitivo di Manduria DOC wine at its peak, and a coastline that shaped centuries of trade and storytelling. The first edition ran from 9 to 11 July 2021 and brought together the Municipality of Manduria and the Consortium for the Protection of Primitivo di Manduria to build something that felt less like a concert series and more like a living excavation of place. If you have ever wanted a festival that rewards curiosity as much as partying, this one delivers. Archaeology enthusiasts can snorkel the seabed off San Pietro in Bevagna to find the King's Sarcophagi, families can let children mould clay into Messapian-style pottery, and evening audiences can hear the Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel perform a set spanning forty years of Italian songwriting under open sky.
