Yalu River Broken Bridge

Imagine walking across a steel railway bridge that was severed mid-span by a bomb in 1951 and never rebuilt. Sixty-odd metres from the Chinese riverbank, the concrete just stops — and beyond the broken edge, North Korea is close enough to make out apartment buildings, factory smoke, and the occasional figure moving along the waterfront. This is the Yalu River Broken Bridge, Dandong's most iconic landmark and one of the most viscerally memorable sights in all of China. The bridge is not a ruin left to rot. It is a carefully maintained historical site with interpretive panels, preserved anti-aircraft guns, and a viewing platform at its truncated end. It is also the closest most visitors to China will ever physically stand to North Korean soil without crossing a border — and that alone makes it a magnet for curious travellers, history buffs, and anyone who has ever wondered what the other side of the world's most sealed frontier actually looks like.
