Bowal Bakama

Bowal Bakama is a quiet 852-metre mountain peak rising in the Mamou prefecture of Guinea, part of the extraordinary Fouta Djallon highlands where grass-topped plateaus called bowals stretch across iron-rich laterite outcrops like natural fortresses above the surrounding valleys. The word bowal itself captures the essence of this landscape: open savanna perched on hardened mineral rock, where the ground rings underfoot and the horizon seems to fold endlessly into blue-green hills. Unlike the grander peaks of the Fouta Djallon that draw trekkers to Labé and Pita, Bowal Bakama sits at the #22 rank among Mamou's summits and is one of 115 in all of Guinea, making it a destination for those who prefer the road less climbed. What makes bowal landscapes compelling is the combination of geology and grassland. The plateau surface is a continuous outcrop of concretised iron pan, typically covered by very thin soils, with patches of deeper earth and gravel upslope. In the wet season, temporary marshes form on upper plateaus, attracting birdlife and creating a surreal wetland-on-rock contrast against the surrounding dry savanna. The result is a mosaic of textures and colours that rewards a close walk along the crest.
