Groudle Beach
Groudle Beach is a small horseshoe-shaped cove tucked beneath the wooded slopes of Groudle Glen on the Isle of Man's east coast, just a couple of miles north of Douglas. Once a smuggler's hideout and later the centrepiece of a Victorian pleasure garden, this pebble strand combines natural beauty with a rich and surprising history. Today the beach is at its best as the endpoint of a gentle walk through one of the island's National Glens, past a restored waterwheel, the ruins of an exotic sea-lion zoo, and the little Groudle Glen Railway that still puffs around the headland on summer days.
