Namhansanseong South Gate
The South Gate of Namhansanseong Fortress—known in Korean as Nammun or Jihwamun—is the grandest of the fortress's four cardinal gates and served as the royal passage into Joseon's emergency capital. Set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site on a mountain plateau 25 km southeast of Seoul, this massive stone gate is both a historical monument and the starting point for some of Korea's most rewarding wall walks. Unlike the fortress's other three gates, the South Gate sits closest to the main visitor hub at Sanseong Rotary, making it the natural entry point for most travelers. From here, the ancient stone walls radiate along mountain ridgelines offering sweeping views over Seoul's eastern suburbs, while the free circuit trails connect all four gates and several pavilions, command posts, and temples tucked within the fortifications.
