El Djouf
El Djouf (Arabic الجوف, 'the hollow') is one of the great emptinesses of the western Sahara — an arid natural region of sand dunes and salt-crusted regs that spreads across northeastern Mauritania and reaches into northwestern Mali. There is no town, no monument, no entrance gate here; the 'sight' is the scale of the desert itself, a flat-to-rolling basin lying around 320 m above sea level where the horizon curves for hundreds of kilometres in every direction and almost nothing breaks it. This is not a place you stumble into on a day trip; it rewards only those who travel deep into the Sahara with a serious expedition. For that small set of travellers, El Djouf offers something increasingly rare: genuine solitude, desert geology written on a continental scale, and a layered past as one of the corridors of the trans-Saharan caravan trade.
