Ha Chu

The Ha Chu is a glacial river in western Bhutan that carves its way south from the high Himalayas through a deep V-shaped valley, past rocky outcrops and traditional villages, before joining the Wong Chhu at Chukho. Its source sits on the south-facing slope of the main Himalayan range, just below Chomo Lhari — the sacred mountain visible from the pass above. If you are travelling through Haa Valley, the river is your constant companion: the village itself grew along a steep drop of the water, and the most atmospheric walks in the district follow its banks. What makes the Ha Chu special as a travel experience is not a single grand viewpoint but the feeling of moving through a landscape still shaped by water and altitude. The upper reaches remain glaciated; the middle and lower course runs through pine and conifer forest, past the White and Black Temples perched on opposite slopes, and alongside the ancient trade route that once connected Haa to Tibet. Walking beside it in the lower valley, you hear the gushing current below village paths while the three peaks of Meri Puensum rise behind you.
