Étang du BouletLake

Étang du Boulet

Tucked into the rolling countryside of Ille-et-Vilaine, thirty-five kilometres north of Rennes, Étang du Boulet is the largest navigable body of water in the département — a 153-hectare expanse that looks like it was always there, but which was actually engineered in 1828 to keep a canal fed with water. Two centuries later, nature has thoroughly reclaimed the engineering. Seasonal fluctuations expose muddy shallows that become breeding grounds for rare amphibians, flowering reed beds, and colonies of birds you will not find at a typical reservoir. The result is a site so ecologically distinctive it earned Natura 2000 protection. For visitors, that backstory translates into something unusual: a lake you can genuinely do all sorts of things with. You can kayak across open water in the morning, spot a great egret standing motionless in a marshy inlet after lunch, and walk an interpretive trail through protected wetlands before sunset. None of it feels crowded, none of it feels packaged. Étang du Boulet works as a half-day outing from Rennes, a stopover between Brittany's canal towns, or a destination in its own right for anyone who likes their nature close and their trails gentle.
