Lopinot Historical Complex
The Lopinot Historical Complex sits in a green fold of Trinidad's Northern Range, a few miles up from Arouca, where the ruins of a 19th-century cocoa estate have been woven into one of the island's most atmospheric heritage villages. Its weathered buildings, riverside paths, caves and working cocoa tradition tell the layered story of French planters, enslaved Africans, Venezuelan peons and Spanish-speaking settlers who shaped this valley. Visitors come to wander the estate grounds, tour the hillside caves, watch chocolate made from bean to bar and dance on mounds of drying cocoa to the beat of drums. Run as a community enterprise by the Lopinot Tourism Association, the site pairs genuine history with local crafts, homemade jams and chocolate, and a living culture of parang music.
