Biserica de lemn Sfântul Dimitrie
On a quiet hill inside the village cemetery at Vechea, a few kilometres west of Cluj-Napoca, stands one of Transylvania's most evocative wooden churches. Built in 1726 and dedicated to Saint Demetrius (Sfântul Dimitrie), the little oak sanctuary is a listed historic monument whose massive hand-hewn beams, intricately carved portal and rare 18th-century wall paintings make it a treasure of Romanian folk sacred architecture. This is no museum piece behind glass: the church still serves the Orthodox community of Vechea, so a visit blends heritage with living ritual. The approach itself sets the mood—you pass under a sculpted wooden cemetery gate before the small, sober building comes into view, ringed by graves and open hillsides, exactly as rural parish churches stood for centuries.
