Patriarchate of Peja Monastery
The Patriarchate of Peja Monastery is a 13th-century Serbian Orthodox complex on the western edge of Peja, Kosovo, set at the mouth of the dramatic Rugova Canyon where the town meets the mountains. Its four interconnected domed churches — built over two centuries by successive archbishops — form a unique architectural symbiosis found nowhere else in Balkan medieval architecture, their red-painted facades glowing against the limestone peaks behind. For over six centuries, Peja was the spiritual capital of the Serbian Orthodox Church — the seat of archbishops, the coronation site of kings, and the burial place of patriarchs. Today it remains an active convent protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to a small community of nuns who tend immaculate gardens and welcome visitors with quiet hospitality.
