Victoria Tower

On a grassy rise above St Peter Port stands Victoria Tower, a 100-foot red-granite monument raised to honour the first-ever visit of a reigning British monarch to Guernsey. Built in 1848 after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert came ashore in 1846, it was never meant to do anything except fly the flag for the island's loyalty to the Crown — yet today its viewing balcony delivers some of the finest panoramas in the Bailiwick, and climbing it is free. A short but steep spiral staircase of 99 steps winds up to a platform ringing the top, where the whole of St Peter Port, the working harbour, the green north of the island and the outlying isles of Herm and Sark spread out below, with the French coast on a clear day. The tower is unlocked only by a key borrowed from the Guernsey Museum in nearby Candie Gardens, making the climb feel like a small, well-kept secret rather than a ticketed attraction.
