Great Mosque of Sanaa

The Great Mosque of Sanaa is one of the oldest mosques on Earth and the first established outside Mecca and Medina. Built in the sixth year of the Hijra, it predates almost every Islamic monument you can point to on a map. Its bright white gypsum brickwork rises above the darker, sand-colored tower houses of Yemen's ancient capital, and from its twin mismatched minarets the call to prayer has echoed through the Old City for nearly fourteen centuries. Beyond its antiquity, the mosque holds a story that stopped the academic world: during a 1972 renovation, workers found a hidden attic filled with parchment fragments now recognized as among the earliest copies of the Quran ever discovered. These Sanaa Manuscripts transformed scholarly understanding of how the Islamic scripture was first recorded, and they remain one of the country's greatest treasures. The mosque is not a museum piece, though. It is a living, breathing center of worship around which the Old City was planned and still grows.
