Fort aux Fresques
Deep beneath a quiet Moselle forest lies an extraordinary piece of military heritage: the Fort aux Fresques (officially Petit Ouvrage A24 du Bois-de-Bousse), a Maginot Line fortification whose underground galleries are adorned with playful murals painted by bored soldiers during the winter of 1939–40. Built between 1931 and 1935 near Hestroff, about 30 km northeast of Metz, this small infantry fort was never fired in anger—yet its subterranean corridors, stretching over a kilometre through grey marl, preserve one of the most human and unexpected legacies of France's defensive line.
