Kakavaberd (Keghi fortress)
Perched atop Geghi Mountain in Armenia's Khosrov Forest State Reserve, Kakavaberd is one of the country's best-preserved medieval fortresses. Its formidable walls crown a rocky ridge overlooking the Azat River gorge, accessible from only one side thanks to the sheer cliffs that shield the other three. The fortress played a real role in the region's turbulent medieval history—serving as a dynastic stronghold, a military base, and a refuge during foreign invasions. The name Kakavaberd means Partridge Fortress in Armenian, though it is also known as Geghi Berd after the mountain it occupies. Today its towers and enclosures stand as a striking monument to the military architecture that shaped medieval Armenia, set within one of the world's oldest protected natural reserves.
