AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Karetny Bridge (Каретный мост) is a wide road-and-pedestrian bridge spanning the Obvodny Canal in southern central St Petersburg, carrying Dneprovskaya Street over the waterway. Opened to traffic in late 2011, it is one of the newest crossings of the canal and marks the boundary between the Tsentralny and Frunzensky districts, which runs along the water.↗↗
Though it began life as a practical piece of urban infrastructure, the bridge carries an evocative name tied to the 19th-century carriage quarter that once stood here, and its sculptural curved steel girders and granite steps down to the canal make it a quietly interesting stop for anyone exploring the redeveloped Obvodny Canal embankments.↗
Crossing the Obvodny Canal
The bridge stretches across the Obvodny Canal in the axis of Dneprovskaya Street, linking Bessomyannyany Island to the left bank of the canal and stitching together two of the city's districts. Its four traffic lanes are flanked by two footpaths, so on foot you can pause at the railings and look along the long, straight cut of the canal—one of St Petersburg's most distinctive and least-expected waterways, originally dug as an industrial outer channel.
