AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tolsta Gora — literally "Fat Mountain" — is a 734-metre forested peak just outside the medieval town of Kamnik, Slovenia. It is a gentle, rewarding half-day hike beloved by locals who want a quick escape from the valley floor without driving far.↗↗
The name sounds grander than the mountain itself, and that is part of the charm: Tolsta Gora is not a dramatic alpine summit but an approachable, rounded hill on the edge of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps foothills, reachable on foot from Kamnik's old town in under two hours.↗↗
Getting to the Top
Several paths lead to the summit, and each offers a different character. The most direct route starts in the town of Kamnik itself — hikers set off from the pub Pod Skalo and climb roughly 445 metres of elevation over about 2.2 kilometres, reaching the top in around an hour and a half. A second option takes you from the settlement of Rudnik pri Radomljah to the south-west, a gentler one-hour-and-twenty-minute ascent.↗
