AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Observatory and Planetarium of Prešov (Hvezdáreň a planetárium v Prešove) is a long-standing astronomy education centre nestled in a quiet residential area of eastern Slovakia's third-largest city. Its star of the show is a vintage Carl Zeiss Jena ZKP-2 projector that fills the domed hall with a hand-crafted night sky—one of the few remaining mechanical planetarium projectors still in operation. Visitors can enjoy themed evening shows set to music, children's programmes, stargazing nights on the observation terrace, and a permanent exhibition about the cosmos.↗↗
With a 4.4-star rating from nearly 100 reviewers, it punches well above its size as a destination for families, school groups, and anyone curious about the night sky.↗
A Living Museum of Astronomy
The planetarium's centrepiece is a ZKP-2 projector manufactured by Carl Zeiss Jena, which produces an artificial night sky through an optical-mechanical projection system. Unlike modern digital fulldome shows, this is a genuine analog instrument with gears and lenses that trace constellations and planets in real time—a tactile link to mid-twentieth-century astronomy education that few visitors get to experience in person.
