Mlilwane Game Sanctuary

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Eswatini's oldest and best-loved conservation area, tucked into the Ezulwini Valley—the "Valley of Heaven"—between the country's two main hubs, Mbabane and Manzini. Born in 1960 when the Reilly family turned their working farm into a refuge for vanishing wildlife, it is today a 4,600-hectare patchwork of grassland plains, riverine forest, mountain and wetland, run by the non-profit Big Game Parks.↗↗↗

What makes Mlilwane unusual in Africa is its freedom. Because the sanctuary holds no dangerous big game, visitors can walk, run and pedal the trails on their own rather than being confined to a vehicle—zebra, wildebeest and warthog graze calmly within sight of the thatched Rest Camp. Add guided horse trails over the granite peak of Nyonyane (the "Rock of Execution"), mountain biking, game drives, birding and village cultural tours, and a compact reserve becomes a genuine outdoor playground for families, solo travellers and groups alike.↗↗

From Family Farm to Pioneer Reserve

The name Mlilwane means "Little Fire" in siSwati, taken from the lightning-blaze fires that once scarred Mlilwane Hill—but the place has earned a second, fitting meaning as the little fire that lit Eswatini's whole conservation movement. By the mid-1900s decades of hunting, farming and tin mining had emptied the countryside of its wildlife. Ted Reilly, a young farmer who had worked at Kruger National Park, was outraged by the silence where there had once been herds. The colonial government turned down his plea for a national park, so in 1960 his family simply converted their own farm into a sanctuary, importing animals and nursing them back to life.↗↗↗

Proclaimed in 1961 as Swaziland's first game sanctuary, Mlilwane grew from a modest farm into a flagship reserve under royal patronage and the stewardship of the Big Game Parks trust, which also runs its sister reserves Hlane Royal National Park and Mkhaya. What was once a mealie field and mine is now a rehabilitated landscape—wetlands, nesting sites, planted indigenous forest and reintroduced animals—standing as a hopeful example of what patient conservation can achieve.↗↗↗

A Sanctuary You Can Explore on Foot

Mlilwane is not a Big Five park, and that is precisely the point. The absence of predators and dangerous game lets the reserve do something few sanctuaries can: it hands you the keys and trusts you to wander. Self-driving is permitted on most roads, and you can set off on foot or by mountain bike along marked day trails without a guide, moving slowly enough to spot wildlife that has grown tolerant of people.↗↗

The herbivore population is the star of the show. Zebra, blue wildebeest and blesbuck favour the open southern plains, greater kudu drift through the forest patches, and warthog, impala, nyala and reedbuck roam so close to the Rest Camp they have become part of daily camp life. Crocodiles bask at the main dam, mongoose scurry along the paths, and—though rarely glimpsed—leopard still prowl the reserve. Across the grasslands, woodland and wetland fly a surprisingly rich birdlife, from fish eagles and kingfishers along the water to forest birds like the narina trogon in the Rest Camp trees and colourful bee-eaters in the woodland.↗↗

Hitting the Trails: Activities

The signature experience here is seeing wildlife on horseback. Chubeka Trails, Mlilwane's horse-trail arm, runs everything from short hourly rides across the plains to half-day excursions and multi-day overnight trails into the northern mountains, with horses and guides suited to complete beginners as well as experienced riders. There are even gentle pony rides for children around the camp. Helmets are provided and weight and booking restrictions apply, so book ahead through the activities centre.↗↗

On foot, a network of around nine hiking trails covering more than 20 km threads through the reserve, the Summit Trail being a favourite for the views. Mountain bikers can hire bikes by the hour at Reception or bring their own, mixing dirt roads with single-track for everything from flat game-viewing cruises to steep mountain grades; the sanctuary even hosts an annual MTB classic that draws cyclists from across the region. For a slower, guided pace, open 4x4 game drives and sunset drives sweep the plains, while the Umphakatsi cultural experience and the Esitjeni village walk take you just beyond the fence into a neighbouring chief's village and community to learn something of rural Swazi life.↗↗

Nyonyane and the Rock of Execution

Dominating the southern plains is Nyonyane Mountain, its sheer 1,110-metre granite peak known as the Rock of Execution. The name recalls a grim era of traditional Swazi law, when alleged criminals were pushed from the summit—"nyonyane" means "little bird," and the rest needs no explanation. Today the mountain is a reward rather than a threat: a popular 3–4 hour hike or horse trail climbs from the plains to the saddle, then a short final scramble delivers sweeping 360-degree views over the Ezulwini and Mantenga valleys below. Overnight riding trails press on into Mlilwane's wilder northern section toward Luphohlo Peak, where only guided parties are permitted.↗↗↗

Staying the Night

The Rest Camp is the heart of Mlilwane, and its charming centrepiece is the row of traditional beehive huts—grass-domed round dwellings with low doors and en-suite bathrooms, arranged into small villages. There are also self-catering rondavels and cottages, plus camping sites tucked into the trees, all offering clean, affordable, no-fuss lodging with valley views. The camp itself has grown into a leafy indigenous forest since the 1960s, concealing the reception, activities centre and a wide swimming pool.↗↗

Meals and views come together at the Hippo Haunt Restaurant, a semi-open dining room that looks out over the Bird Pool with its busy heronry, serving buffet dinners and à la carte lunches. A short drive away, budget travellers can opt for Sondzela Backpackers, while those wanting a finer stay can choose Reilly's Rock Hilltop Lodge—so Mlilwane suits everyone from backpackers to families looking for a comfortable safari base.↗

Visiting Mlilwane

The sanctuary sits conveniently between Mbabane and Manzini, close to the craft markets and attractions of Ezulwini and Malkerns, and offers 24-hour gate access—though check-in runs sunrise to sunset, with a designated night route outside those hours. Day visitors are welcome to self-drive, picnic and join activities until about 18:00, making Mlilwane as easy to pop into for an afternoon as to stay a week. The reserve is largely wheelchair-friendly, good for kids, and card-and-mobile-payment only at the gate.↗↗

In terms of when to come, wildlife viewing is rewarding year-round because animal movement here is managed, but the dry winter months from May to September are best for spotting—shorter grass and reliable waterholes draw animals into the open, and the mornings turn pleasantly cool after the summer rains. Whichever season you visit, the Ezulwini Valley light, the mountain backdrop and the unusual liberty of walking among the game make Mlilwane one of southern Africa's most approachable and heartwarming small reserves.↗↗

A little planning goes a long way

Don't rely blindly on turn-by-turn navigation—the sanctuary recommends driving to the Sangweni Gate (roughly 26.28475 S, 31.11464 E) or aiming for Esitjeni Primary School just before it, as mapping apps often route to the wrong gate.↗
The gates open for check-in from sunrise to sunset, with 24-hour access on a designated night route; book horse, walking and bike activities about an hour before departure (overnight trails need at least 24 hours' notice).↗↗
Bring card or mobile payment rather than cash, as the reserve has gone cashless at the gate.↗
For the best animal sightings, come in the dry winter (May–September) when grass is low and creatures gather at the waterholes; mornings are cool and lovely.↗
