Dushanbe Zoo

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Dushanbe Zoo (Tajik: Боғи Ҳайвоноти Душанбе) is the capital's one and only public zoo, a compact green patch on Ismoil Somoni Avenue tucked beside the small Luchob (Dushanbinka) river and the Pamir Stadium. Founded in 1960–61 and now spread over roughly 6.7 hectares, it is a deliberately old-school city menagerie rather than a safari park — but it is also a living archive of Tajik natural history, the most affordable family day out in central Dushanbe, and one of the few places where a visitor can stand close to a snow leopard, a brown bear or a Bactrian camel.↗↗↗

The honest picture is mixed and worth knowing before you go. At its Soviet peak the zoo held nearly 400 species and over 2,500 animals and was thought one of the best in the USSR; the civil war of the 1990s wiped out around 95% of the collection, and the enclosures that remain are small, concrete-fronted cages built to mid-century standards, which local writers openly criticize. Today the zoo keeps a few hundred animals across about 130 species, runs on city subsidies, and long-discussed plans to relocate to a bigger modern site have never fully materialized. Set your expectations for a modest, inexpensive, deeply human little zoo with a poignant past, not a world-class attraction.

From circus lions to a beloved elephant couple: a zoo with a story

The idea of a capital zoo came from a scientist, not a mayor. In 1939 the zoologist Yevgeny Pavlovsky argued in print that Tajikistan's rich fauna — around thirty species of predator alone — deserved a proper collection in the city then called Stalinabad. The plan was filed away when World War II broke out, and the war instead gave the project an unexpected start: part of the Moscow zoo's animals were evacuated to Tajikistan. Construction resumed in the late 1950s, the collection began filling in 1960, and the zoo officially opened in 1961. Its first big cats came straight out of the ring — the touring animal trainer Ivan Ruban donated lions, a tiger, a panther and bears, and the celebrated trainer Walid Zapashny sent jaguars and a leopard in 1969.↗↗

The Soviet decades were the golden age. By the mid-1970s the zoo numbered well over a thousand animals of some 250 species and was considered one of the best in the USSR, helped by Dushanbe's mild climate, which let even tropical species be kept outdoors. Its stars were a pair of Indian elephants — Raj and Angie, later the Leipzig-gifted Deli — whose arrival and reunion were followed across the country. By 1991 the zoo had drawn more than 800,000 visitors and held a collection that included Red Book species such as the Pallas's cat, Przewalski's horse and the snow leopard.↗↗↗

Independence and the 1992–97 civil war were devastating: funding collapsed, the elephants died of cold and hunger, and roughly 95% of the animals were lost. The zoo never fully returned to its former scale, but it never once closed, and a slow rebuild followed — new specialists, agreements with local farms for feed, and exchanges with the Moscow and St Petersburg zoos. Since 2007 it has been a member of the Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (ERAZA).↗↗

Who you'll meet on the walk

The route is organized into loose sections — predators, ungulates, primates, birds, and reptiles and fish — so a 20-minute wander covers a surprising range. The big-cat row is the headline act, home to lions and, the pride of any local collection, a snow leopard (irbis), the high-mountain cat that is Tajikistan's most famous endangered species. The native-wildlife side is the most rewarding: brown and black bears, wolves, jackals and foxes, raccoon dogs, and the two-humped Bactrian camel that still embodies the Central Asian steppe.↗↗↗

Beyond the local cast there are imported residents — macaque monkeys, birds of prey such as owls, vultures, golden eagles and falcons, and large hoofed animals like maral deer, oryx and gnu added in recent replenishment efforts. Reptile fans should look for the terrarium, long described as one of the zoo's better houses with many varieties of snakes and lizards on display indoors, though this building has suffered a serious fire in its recent past. Birds and mammals here have bred in captivity, from lion cubs to emu chicks raised without an incubator.↗↗↗↗

What it actually feels like to visit

Walk into the grounds along Ismoil Somoni Avenue and you get a small, shaded, park-like space — about 4 hectares of exhibits and ponds plus a tree-lined park zone — where families picnic, kids run on the playground, and the animals occupy cages that are plainly too small for them. There is no pretending this is a modern safari experience; the enclosures date to the 1960s and are walled and barred rather than landscaped, and on hot summer afternoons several animals lie lethargic away from the bars. Visitors who come expecting a polished zoo leave disappointed; those who come to see Tajik wildlife up close, to show children animals they could otherwise only meet in the mountains, and to absorb a melancholy slice of Soviet history, leave with something memorable.↗↗↗

It is also, quietly, a place with a devoted public. The zoo is the only institution in the country that presents local and foreign fauna to a mass audience, and outside help has shaped it — a 2006 bear accident prompted pen-pal schoolchildren in Dushanbe and Albion, Indiana to lobby for improvements, which led to a US museum grant that funded repaired fences, signage, a garden, a picnic area and the playground. That community spirit is part of the charm.↗↗

Getting there and around the neighbourhood

The zoo sits in the central right-bank part of the city, hard to miss on Ismoil Somoni Avenue beside the river and adjacent to the Pamir Stadium, covering roughly twice the stadium's footprint. Being central, it pairs easily with a downtown stroll: the grand Navruz Palace and the Komsomol (Youth) Lake park are close enough to combine, and the Alulak amusement area and other family attractions cluster nearby. Taxis are cheap and every local driver knows the zoo, which even has a public-bus stop named after it.↗↗↗↗

If you want a fuller Tajikistan experience, the zoo is a good appetizer for the real thing: the snow leopard, the bears and the birds of prey here are ambassadors for the mountain wilderness beyond the city — Hisor Fortress is an easy day trip, and the Fann and Pamir ranges are where these species truly live.↗

Practical tips

Admission is inexpensive — reported in the order of 10 somoni for adults and 5 somoni for children — and the zoo is generally open every day from around 9:00 in the morning, with listed hours running until 9:00 at night, so late-evening visits in summer are possible once the heat has eased. Expect to spend one to three hours at a relaxed pace.↗↗

Go on a weekday morning if you can: animals are most active in the cool of the day and weekend crowds of families thin out sharply. Carry small cash in local currency for snacks and drinks inside, and wear sturdy, comfortable shoes for the unpaved park paths. A zoom lens is useful for clear shots through the fencing without stressing the animals; photography is permitted throughout. May, June and September offer the most pleasant walking weather, while peak summer heat is hard on both animals and visitors.↗↗

The grounds have a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and the playground and open park zone make it genuinely good for children — arguably its single best use is as an affordable, easy-to-reach day out for families. Be sensitive that some visitors find the conditions sad, and don't expect facilities or animal welfare comparable to Western zoos.↗↗↗

A little planning goes a long way

Visit on a weekday morning for quieter paths and more active animals; avoid the stifling midday heat of July and August.↗↗
Bring small bills in somoni for snacks and drinks inside.↗
Allow one to three hours, then walk on to the nearby Navruz Palace and Komsomol (Youth) Lake for a fuller afternoon downtown.↗↗
Use a zoom lens for cleaner photos through the bars, and remember the enclosures are old and tight — this is a historic city zoo, not a modern safari.↗↗
