AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Baidak Square (Baýdak meydançasy) is the civic centerpiece of Dashoguz, a broad plaza dominated by a 100-meter flagpole flying Turkmenistan's national flag. Opened in October 2015, the square unites a grand architectural ensemble — the Ruhiet Palace, a music and drama theatre, and the regional library — into a single sweeping public space that serves as both a symbol of national pride and a gathering place for local life.↗↗
Visitors find a spacious, well-maintained environment where the enormous flag mast — engineered to withstand wind and seismic forces, with a banner weighing hundreds of kilograms — commands the skyline. At night, floodlights transform the pole into a blazing beacon. A small adjacent park offers a spot for picnics and evening strolls, and the setting is a favorite for photography.↗
The Flagpole and Its Story
The square's defining feature is its towering 100-meter flagpole, one of the tallest in Turkmenistan. The structure was designed with wind loads and seismic activity in mind — important engineering considerations in this continental climate. The national flag that flies from its peak weighs several hundred kilograms, a canvas large enough to be visible across the plaza and surrounding boulevards.
