AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Kamehame Ridge is a short, rewarding climb on the southeastern tip of Oʻahu that delivers some of the most spectacular coastal panoramas on the island. From its summit on the southernmost reach of the Koʻolau Mountains, you'll gaze down at the impossibly turquoise waters of Waimānalo Beach, across to the iconic Makapuʻu coastline, and westward to Koko Head Crater and the Hawaii Kai shoreline.↗↗
Once famous as the trail to the "Dead Man's Catwalk"—a concrete slab perched at the cliff's edge that went viral in Instagram's early days—the ridge has quieted since that landmark was removed in 2016. Today it offers something arguably better: the same jaw-dropping views without the crowds, plus a genuine sense of discovery along the windswept crest.↗
Getting There & Starting the Hike
The trailhead sits at the very top of Kamehame Drive in the Hawaii Kai neighborhood of Honolulu. Drive east on Kalanianaʻole Highway toward Hanauma Bay, then turn left onto Lunalilo Home Road before reaching the bay. Continue through the residential streets—Hawaii Kai Drive, Maunawani Street—until Kamehame Drive dead-ends at a gated trailhead. Park along the street, keeping noise low since this is a quiet neighborhood.
