AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked at the base of the mountains in Maracay, Venezuela, Las Delicias Zoo serves as a gateway to the country’s natural heritage. Originally a private collection for former president Juan Vicente Gómez, it is the oldest zoo in Venezuela, officially inaugurated in 1952 but hosting animals since 1915. Today, this 7-hectare conservation center operates as an urban sanctuary, providing a cool, green retreat just steps from the Henri Pittier National Park.↗↗
The park focuses heavily on native Venezuelan species, meaning visitors can get up close with animals found in the country's specific ecosystems, such as the endangered Caribbean manatee and majestic Andean condors. It is an ideal destination for families and nature enthusiasts looking to combine sightseeing with wildlife education.↗↗↗
A Living Sanctuary
Spanning seven hectares, the zoo offers a variety of pathways and open-air environments for its inhabitants. Its centerpiece is the largest aviary in Latin America, which houses over 1,000 birds. Walking through the grounds, you’ll encounter jaguars, white lions, and a wide array of reptiles including crocodiles and the massive mata-mata turtle. The setting is lush and tropical, making it a pleasant environment even during warmer days due to the surrounding vegetation.
