AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve is the place people describe as Ha Long Bay without waves. Swap the motorboat hum for the gentle splash of wooden oars, trade the deep blue of the sea for emerald-green freshwater, and find yourself gliding through a vast inland lake ringed by limestone towers, their reflections trembling on glass-still water. This is Ninh Binh's quiet secret, a wetland sanctuary far larger than most visitors imagine and dramatically less crowded than its famous neighbors Tam Coc and Trang An.↗↗↗
Spanning more than 3,500 hectares in Gia Vien District, about 82 kilometers south of Hanoi, Van Long is the largest inland wetland in the entire Northern Delta. It earned recognition as a Ramsar wetland site in 2018 and became the first nature reserve in Southeast Asia to join the IUCN Green List in 2020. But those credentials mean little to a traveler who simply wants to feel the world slow down. Here, the silence is real: no engines, no crowds, just birdsong, the creak of a bamboo boat, and the occasional rustle of a rare langur swinging through treetops overhead.↗↗
