AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Naiwe Beach at Blue Water sits where a river meets the sea on Efate's east coast, about 20 minutes' drive from Port Vila. It is best known as a place where visitors can wade into a shallow lagoon to feed and swim alongside sea turtles, spot baby sharks, and encounter coconut crabs — followed by a beachside BBQ lunch.↗↗
However, this attraction has drawn persistent and serious criticism from animal-welfare-conscious travellers. If ethical wildlife encounters matter to your trip planning, you should read the concerns below before deciding whether to visit.↗↗
What You'll Find
The site occupies a picturesque spot at a river mouth where freshwater and saltwater mix in a calm, shallow lagoon bordered by mangroves and open sand. Operators have built the attraction around close encounters with marine and coastal animals: sea turtles (including large adults and baby turtles), reef sharks kept in netted enclosures, sting rays, starfish, coconut crabs, and various birds. Guides lead you through the enclosures and into the water to feed and interact with the turtles.
