The apartment was clean, tidy, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Key pick-up was easy, and the host was super friendly and welcoming, which made the check-in process smooth. Unfortunately, our stay was slightly affected by some inconsiderate, noisy people in apartment below early in the morning, and there were quite intense cooking smells at times. Overall, the apartment itself was well maintained and convenient, and we appreciated the helpful host.

We paid in full when booking but was charged an extra NZD 70 cleaning fee at check-in, which was not clearly disclosed. Mandatory fees should be stated upfront. This lack of transparency was disappointing and undermined my trust. BTW…. The overall environment is good.

Nice place. For big group. Ideally would be good to have nonstick pan, gladrap, paper towel and tissue paper handy.

There should be some officials to determine if a site is suitable for airbnb/tourist rental or not... its a very inconsiderate site to even rent out to tourist...

We booked this property through a hotel booking platform and paid the full amount upfront. Yet upon arrival, we were told to pay an additional NZD 70 for a so-called “cleaning fee.” This charge was never clearly disclosed during the booking process. Adding mandatory fees only after guests arrive is unacceptable and feels misleading. If there are compulsory extra costs, they must be stated clearly and transparently before payment is made — not sprung on guests at check-in. This experience seriously undermined our trust. We strongly urge the property to be honest and transparent about all fees so future guests are not put in the same frustrating position. Furthermore, upon arrival, we realized the laundry powder was only very few left, it would be more appropriate to provide adequate amount, especially charging the cleaning fee.

Please note this review is purely based on their strict cancellation policy. Apartments on Upton has a strict 30 day cancellation policy with no flexibility. When I unfortunately had to cancel my reservation 3 weeks in advance due to an injury, I was informed that I could potentially receive a portion of a refund if the property is rebooked during my original stay, which is frustrating but understandable. What is not understandable is me checking online and noticing they had a technical issue so that NO reservations could possibly be made for the location leading up to my original reservation dates. I made the property aware of this technical issue and for the first few days they did not believe me, stating 'clearly we are taking reservations' and 'i do not know what you are suggesting.' When I finally sent a second round of screenshots and steps proving that no reservations could be made, and stating that this impacted any chance of me getting a refund while also preventing them from making any profit on new reservations, they only said 'sorry for the inconvenience.' Again, I recognize that it was my own unfortunate circumstances that caused a cancellation 10 days after their refund window closed, but it is incredibly frustrating that their technical issues prevented any sort of refund flexibility. There are many other places in Wanaka that have a better cancellation policy so I would be cautious of booking Apartments on Upton or any of their sister properties (Te Wanaka Lodge, Wanaka Selection Properties).

Unfortunately we couldn't make it down to stay at Apartments on Upton due to Auckland being in Level 4 lockdown, but they were so so helpful and friendly about cancelling our booking last minute after my cancellation from Booking.com didn't go through. I was so impressed with their customer service and would book with them again in an instant when we plan our next Wanaka trip. Thanks
