Tahiti is one island, not all of French Polynesia. Here is how to reach it, how Moorea and Bora Bora connect, what to check before entry, and how to split your nights.
Backpacking across Europe can run about €30 a day or about €120, depending on where the nights fall. Sourced daily costs, a method for pricing rail legs, the entry rules and sample routes for a month.
No single country wins. France, Italy and Spain suit a first trip, Switzerland, Austria and Germany suit rail travel, and Portugal, Greece and Albania suit the coast. Routes, trip lengths and trade-offs follow.

By the editorial desk. This is a desk-research guide built from the Air Tahiti, State Department and tourism sources cited inline. It is not a first-person trip report. Air Tahiti figures come from an undated page fetched 2026-11-07. Recheck schedules and entry rules before you book.
No, Tahiti is not the same as French Polynesia. Tahiti is one island in the Society Islands and the gateway to the rest of the territory. Moorea and Bora Bora are separate islands, and many people who search for Tahiti mean the whole map.
This Tahiti travel guide runs in travel order: Tahiti first, then the hops to Moorea and Bora Bora, then entry rules, season, trip length, sights and packages.
French Polynesia is the territory. Air Tahiti's coming-to-Polynesia page says the airline flies from Tahiti-Faa'a to all five archipelagos: the Society Islands, Tuamotu, Marquesas, Austral and Gambier. Tahiti sits in the first of those, the Society Islands.
Papeete is the territory's capital and a working port. The Moorea ferry leaves from Papeete harbor, so you will pass through town even if you never book a night there.

Every international flight lands at Tahiti-Faa'a International Airport (PPT), according to Air Tahiti. Moorea and Bora Bora are reached from there.
The same page gives approximate flight times to Tahiti:
| Origin | Approximate flight time |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles or San Francisco | about 8 hours |
| Honolulu | about 6 hours |
| Paris (includes a US stopover) | about 22 hours |
These are airline-page approximations, and the page is undated. Confirm carriers and schedules when you book. We publish no fares because none were verified.
Before you fly, ask your hotel whether it arranges the airport transfer and what that covers.
The transit times come from Air Tahiti's page. The nights column is our editorial split, not a sourced figure.
| Island | How you reach it | Transit from Tahiti | Suggested nights (editorial) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tahiti | International flight to PPT | Arrival point | 2 to 3 |
| Moorea | Air Tahiti flight, or ferry from Papeete harbor | about 15 minutes by air; about 30 minutes by ferry | 2 to 3 |
| Bora Bora | Domestic Air Tahiti flight from Tahiti | about 50 minutes by air | 3 to 4 |
Moorea is the easiest addition to a Tahiti stay. Air Tahiti lists about 15 minutes by air and about 30 minutes by ferry from Papeete harbor.
The Papeete to Moorea crossing is run by ferry operators, including Aremiti and Terevau. We did not verify current fares or timetables, so we print none. Check the operator's schedule before you plan a ferry day, and choose the flight if your arrival or departure day is tight.
Can you fly straight to Bora Bora? No. International flights land on Tahiti, and Bora Bora is a domestic Air Tahiti connection of about 50 minutes, per the Air Tahiti page.
That connection is why Bora Bora needs a buffer. If your long-haul flight runs late, a same-day connection is the leg most likely to break. One night on Tahiti or Moorea first is a cheap precaution.
Rules change. Confirm them on the US State Department's French Polynesia country page and with your airline before you buy.
US citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days and must hold a valid passport, according to Air Tahiti. Check the State Department page above for the government wording. Other nationalities should check their own government's requirements.
A search snippet of the State Department's French Polynesia page, which we could not open in full, indicates a passport valid for six months and a return or onward ticket. Confirm the six-month figure on the page itself.
Private sources differ. Tahiti.com says 180 days beyond the return date. Maeva Tahiti, writing for UK travellers, says three months and notes that airlines may apply the strictest rule.
Plan on six months. If your passport has less than that, consider renewing before you book, because airlines may apply the strictest rule at check-in.
If you travel on the Visa Waiver Program and change planes in Los Angeles or San Francisco, you pass through the US. Maeva Tahiti says an approved ESTA is needed in that case. Confirm your itinerary on the official CBP ESTA site before you buy flights.

When is the rainy season? One Lonely Planet piece puts the dry season at May to October and the wet season at November to April. Another Lonely Planet piece puts the wet season at December to March, with a June to September peak for visitors.
The two edges differ by about a month, and tourism material skews promotional. Treat the shoulder months of April, May, October and November as the uncertain ones, and check a forecast for your exact dates.
Editorial view: you are trading crowds against rain. Peak months bring more visitors, and wetter months bring more weather risk.
Visiting Oceania lists Heiva i Tahiti as a July festival. We did not verify dates, so check the official calendar if you want to time a trip around it.
Published advice varies. One source says under five days is not worth the journey, others suggest seven to ten days, and the tourism board's 2023 material, which is promotional, suggests ten to twelve.
For time on Tahiti itself, Visiting Oceania suggests two to four days, and My Little Polynesia, a tour seller, suggests three or more. Note the seller's interest.
Is Tahiti worth more than a layover? It can be, if you want a market, waterfalls and valleys beyond the airport. The trade-off is lagoon time on Moorea or Bora Bora, which is what many people fly this far for.
These splits are our editorial opinion, not a verified itinerary:
Once you have a split, you can run it through Fortrip's itinerary validator to see whether the flights and the ferry fit your days.
Think of the island in two zones: Papeete and the west coast, and the wilder east and south. We list places by name only. Confirm opening hours and trail access with the official tourism board or a local guide.
Tahiti Iti is the smaller southeastern peninsula. Teahupo'o is the surf break at its end, tied to the Billabong Pro Teahupo'o event. We give no dates for the competition.

Are all-inclusive French Polynesia packages available, and how do they work? A package typically bundles international flights, inter-island flights, lodging and transfers. Which pieces are included varies by seller. We quote no prices because none were verified.
Before you buy, check:
Multi-island bundles pack several hops into one booking. That is convenient, but it can lock you into hotels and dates, and tour sellers and resorts have a commercial interest. Compare a bundle with the cost of booking the pieces yourself, and confirm any deal with the seller on the day.

Flight times, connection times and the 90-day visa line come from the Air Tahiti page, which is undated and was fetched on 2026-11-07. Entry rules point to the State Department's French Polynesia page and the CBP ESTA site. The six-month passport figure is from a search snippet, not the full page.
Season months are attributed to Lonely Planet, and trip-length ranges to the tourism board and the named publishers. Ferry fares, package prices and Heiva dates were not verified. Nights splits and the renew-early advice are editorial.
