Downright Austin, A Renaissance Hotel

The best time to visit Austin is from October to April, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. March and April are pleasant, though April sees more rain. Summer months from June to August are very hot, with highs often above 34°C. October and November offer comfortable weather and lower humidity, making them ideal for outdoor activities.

Stay downtown for walkable access to the Capitol, museums, and nightlife, with hotels like the Fairmont Austin and Hyatt Regency Austin. South Congress (SoCo) suits a more laid-back vibe, with boutique shops and the South Congress Hotel nearby. Barton Creek, west of downtown, offers a quieter, resort-style stay, such as the Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa. For a residential feel with easy park access, consider the area around Barton Springs Road, close to the greenbelt and pool.

Start with Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed pool that is the city's favorite way to cool off. The Texas Capitol is a grand 19th-century building with free tours of its rotunda and grounds. The Bullock Texas State History Museum tells the story of Texas with engaging exhibits and an IMAX theater. For outdoor scenery, hike the Barton Creek Greenbelt for its limestone cliffs and swimming holes, or drive up to Mount Bonnell for the best views of the city and the lake. The Cathedral of Junk is a quirky, towering sculpture made of recycled materials, worth a quick stop for its sheer originality.

Full-day tours from Austin head to the Texas Hill Country for Fredericksburg's wineries and Main Street, plus the LBJ Ranch and wildflower fields in season. Another common trip is to the Hamilton Pool Preserve for its collapsed grotto and waterfall. If you prefer staying close, a day in Wimberley offers the swimming hole at Jacob's Well and art shops. These make a good change from downtown sights.

Plan 3 days for Austin: one for the Texas Capitol and Bullock Museum, one for Barton Springs Pool and the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and one for Mount Bonnell and the Pennybacker Bridge Overlook. If you want a day trip, add an extra day.
