Visit in May or June for the most pleasant weather, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. July and August are the warmest, but also bring the most rain. Autumn, especially September, offers a comfortable mix of dry days and clear views of the Alps. The famous Neuschwanstein Castle is stunning in any season, but the Christmas markets in December add festive charm if you don't mind cold weather.
Stay in Füssen's old town (Altstadt) for the medieval lanes, Hohes Schloss, and easy walks to the Lechfall. The city center, around the train station and Kaiser-Maximilian-Platz, suits those wanting quick access to buses and shops, with hotels like Best Western Plus and Hotel Hirsch nearby. Hopfen am See on the lake offers a quieter, scenic stay; Hotel Geiger and Haus Gohlke sit right on the water. Pick the old town for charm, the center for convenience, or the lake for relaxation.
Neuschwanstein Castle is the fairy-tale palace that inspired Disney, a must-see landmark. Hohenschwangau Castle, the royal residence where young Ludwig II grew up, sits just below it. Lechfall offers a dramatic waterfall where the river exits the Alps, and Mary's Bridge gives the classic postcard view of Neuschwanstein. Hohes Schloss is the medieval palace in the old town, while Füssen Altstadt itself charms with cobbled lanes and colorful facades. Start with Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, then explore the town.
Full-day tours from Füssen head to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof castles, both royal residences with stunning architecture and mountain settings, and to Innsbruck, where you can see the old town and Swarovski Crystal World. The castle tours cover two day-trip destinations in one trip. Innsbruck is a separate day trip with a different focus.
Plan for 2 days to see the main sights. On the first day, visit Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau Castle, and walk over Mary's bridge for the classic views. On the second day, explore the Füssen Altstadt, Hohes Schloss, and Lechfall. If you want to add a day trip to Linderhof or Innsbruck, plan for a third day.
