The best time is December to April, when rain is scarce and the sea is calm. January and February are especially pleasant, with warm days and cooling breezes. October and November bring the heaviest rain, while July to September are hot and humid with frequent showers. For guaranteed sunshine, plan between February and April.
Chaweng suits first-timers: it has the longest beach, most dining and nightlife, and hotels like Baan Haad Ngam. Lamai is a more relaxed strip with a lively evening scene, where Renaissance Koh Samui sits. Choeng Mon is quiet and family-friendly, home to Garrya Tongsai Bay. For a charming mix of cafes and restaurants, stay in Bophut's Fisherman's Village area.
Big Buddha's Wat Phra Yai is iconic, with its towering statue and seaside setting. Hin Ta Hin Yai offers curious rock formations with local legends. Wat Plai Laem is a visually striking temple complex with a large Guanyin statue. Tarnim Magic Garden, a hillside sculpture park, is unique and peaceful. Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, accessible by boat tour, features limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons.
Take a full-day boat trip to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park for its limestone islands, lagoons, and snorkeling. You can also speedboat to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan for excellent diving and snorkeling. Jungle safari tours cover inland viewpoints, waterfalls, and elephant encounters. Plan 4 to 5 days. In 3 days you can visit Wat Phra Yai, Wat Plai Laem, Hin Ta Hin Yai, Tarnim Magic Garden, and relax at Choeng Mon or Crystal Beach. Add a day for the Angthong National Marine Park boat tour, and a fifth day gives leeway for Lad Koh View Point and Tan Rua Waterfall. The day trip to Angthong needs its own full day.
