April and May are the most pleasant months, with mild temperatures and moderate humidity, plus the cherry blossoms in early April. October sees similar comfort after summer's heat. November brings the fewest rain days, making it a clear winner too. The stretch from June through September is the hottest and wettest, especially July and August, though July hosts the famous Gion Matsuri. Winter months are cold but drier.
Stay in Higashiyama for the historic atmosphere, with temples and traditional streets around Gion; it suits first-timers. Downtown around Kawaramachi and Karasuma offers easy dining and shopping access, good for convenience. The area near Kyoto Station works well for travelers relying on trains; it is practical for day trips. These central districts put you close to Kiyomizu-dera, Nishiki Market, and Nijo Castle.
Start with Fushimi Inari Taisha for its endless red torii gates climbing the mountain. Kiyomizu-dera offers a grand wooden stage with sweeping city views.
